PREGNANCY PILATES IN LONDON | PRENATAL & POSTNATAL PILATES

PILATES THROUGH PREGNANCY AND BEYOND

Pilates can be a great way to continue moving throughout pregnancy, helping you maintain strength, mobility and body awareness as your body changes. At Tempo 301, we offer options for both new and existing students seeking safe, supported pregnancy Pilates in London, with guidance tailored to each stage of pregnancy. Our pregnancy guidance has been developed by our antenatal-qualified Pilates instructors and follows current recommendations for safe exercise during pregnancy.

Our antenatal options include Pregnancy Reformer Personal Training and suitable Reformer Pilates classes at our E1 | Shoreditch, E8 | Hackney and SE17 Elephant & Castle studios across East and South East London. At Elephant & Castle, we also offer dedicated prenatal and postnatal Mat Pilates, alongside a range of Signature classes, including Strength, Barre and Yoga, with guidance on which classes are suitable during pregnancy and when modifications may be required.

As pregnancy progresses, the way you exercise may need to change. Our approach prioritises control, technique and appropriate movement, with qualified instructors providing guidance and modifications where needed. Below, you’ll find everything you need to know about exercising at Tempo 301 during pregnancy, including Reformer Pilates, Signature classes, Pregnancy PT and returning to exercise after giving birth.

BENEFITS OF PILATES DURING PREGNANCY

Pilates can support both strength and mobility during pregnancy, while encouraging greater awareness of posture, breathing and the pelvic floor as your body changes. Controlled, considered movement can also help you adapt to changes in balance and posture, while maintaining the strength needed to support your body throughout pregnancy.

For some people, staying active can also help manage common pregnancy-related discomfort, including back pain and stiffness. Pilates places an emphasis on breathing, control and body awareness, which can be valuable throughout pregnancy and may also help you feel more physically prepared for birth and postnatal recovery.

Staying active during pregnancy is also supported by NHS guidance, which recommends continuing normal daily physical activity or exercise for as long as you feel comfortable, while adapting activity as your pregnancy progresses.

  TEMPO PILATES

REFORMER PILATES DURING PREGNANCY

You may continue to attend Tempo Pilates classes during early pregnancy, provided you are fit and healthy. However, some restrictions apply as your pregnancy progresses:

UP TO 16 WEEKS

You may attend regular Beginner/Intermediate (Beginner and L1) classes.

16–18 WEEKS

Before joining further group classes, you must complete a Pregnancy PT session with one of our antenatal-qualified trainers. This ensures you understand the necessary modifications for safe participation.

AFTER 18 WEEKS

You can continue attending eligible group Reformer classes only after completing your Pregnancy PT and must book with an antenatal-qualified trainer.

WHICH REFORMER PILATES CLASSES CAN I ATTEND WHILE PREGNANT?

To keep you and your baby safe throughout your pregnancy, the following rules apply:

These rules are in place to ensure every pregnant student trains safely and receives the right level of support.

If you share your pregnancy for the first time between 16 and 18 weeks during a class, you’re welcome to complete that class as long as the trainer is antenatal-qualified. Our reception team will ask you to sign the Pregnancy Waiver before you take part, and we’ll then help you book your Pregnancy PT before attending any further classes.

If you are over 18 weeks pregnant and have not completed a Pregnancy PT, you cannot attend group classes until you have completed the PT.

PREGNANCY PT & ANTENATAL-QUALIFIED TRAINERS

Our reception team will coordinate your Pregnancy PT with one of our skilled and experienced Tempo Pilates antenatal-qualified trainers:

Gina • Toby • Deinny • Isabella • Aleksandra • Gui • Serena • Pérola • Georgina

HOW DOES PREGNANCY REFORMER PT WORK?

As your pregnancy progresses, your Reformer Pilates practice will need to adapt to accommodate the changes taking place in your body. Our Pregnancy Reformer Personal Training sessions give you dedicated time with an antenatal-qualified Tempo trainer to learn the modifications you’ll need to continue exercising safely and confidently.

During your session, your trainer will take you through appropriate adjustments to exercises and Reformer set-up, as well as movements that may need to be avoided or adapted. For existing Tempo students, the session also helps prepare you to continue attending suitable group Reformer classes where appropriate, with a clear understanding of how to modify your practice as your pregnancy progresses.

RETURNING TO REFORMER PILATES AFTER GIVING BIRTH

To return safely after your baby arrives, medical clearance is required:
Vaginal birth: From 6 weeks
Caesarean: From 12 weeks

Once approved, we suggest beginning with Beginner/Intermediate classes. These levels help rebuild core strength, stability, and confidence before moving into more challenging classes, with guidance and support from our expert trainers.

We’re committed to supporting you through a safe and positive return to Pilates, with expert guidance tailored to each stage of your postnatal journey.

  TEMPO SIGNATURE

STRENGTH, BARRE & YOGA DURING PREGNANCY

At our Elephant & Castle studio, our Signature programme offers additional ways to keep moving during pregnancy, including Mat Pilates, Strength, Barre, Sculpt and Yoga. As with Reformer Pilates, some classes and exercises may need to be adapted as your pregnancy progresses, so it’s important to let your instructor know that you’re pregnant before class.

You may continue to attend Tempo Signature classes during early pregnancy, provided you are fit and healthy. After 16 weeks, you can attend Signature classes with medical clearance, but you will need to let reception and your instructor know beforehand. As these formats are not pregnancy-specific, you must be confident modifying movements appropriately throughout the class. Our antenatal-qualified Signature trainers are Serena, Gui and Carol.

All pregnant students attending Signature classes are required to read and sign the Pregnancy Waiver at reception before joining the class.

Hear from two Tempo mums about their experience of our Baby & Me classes and returning to Pilates after having their babies.

YOUR POSTNATAL RETURN TO EXERCISE

Returning to exercise after giving birth is different for everyone, and it’s important to give your body time to recover. Before returning to Tempo 301 classes, we recommend following the appropriate postnatal recovery period and seeking guidance from your GP or healthcare professional where needed.

When you’re ready to return, starting gradually can help you rebuild strength, reconnect with your core and pelvic floor, and regain confidence in movement. Our dedicated Postnatal Mat Pilates and Baby & Me classes at Elephant & Castle provide a supported route back into exercise, while students wishing to return to Reformer Pilates can follow our postnatal guidance before rejoining suitable Tempo Pilates classes.

WHY CHOOSE TEMPO 301 FOR PREGNANCY PILATES?

At Tempo 301, pregnancy Pilates is supported by experienced, antenatal-qualified instructors who understand how movement needs to adapt as your pregnancy progresses. Our small Reformer classes allow trainers to provide individual guidance and corrections, while Pregnancy PT offers dedicated support when more personalised modifications are needed.

We’ve been teaching Reformer Pilates in London for over 16 years, with a structured approach built around control, technique and progression. Across our Shoreditch, Hackney and Elephant & Castle studios, we aim to help you continue moving with confidence while following clear guidance appropriate to your stage of pregnancy.

If you’re pregnant and planning to attend Tempo 301, please let us know as early as you can, ideally before you reach 16 weeks, so we can support you safely.

Email [email protected] to inform us, and our reception team will talk you through the next steps and help arrange any required sessions with an antenatal-qualified trainer.

PREGNANCY PILATES FAQs

If you already practise Reformer Pilates at Tempo 301, you may be able to continue during pregnancy with appropriate modifications. The classes you can attend depend on your stage of pregnancy and previous Reformer experience. As your pregnancy progresses (16-18 weeks), we will ask you to complete a Pregnancy Reformer PT session, so you understand the modifications needed before continuing with suitable group classes.

If you’re new to Reformer Pilates, pregnancy isn’t the time we recommend starting in our regular group Reformer classes. Instead, our Pregnancy Reformer Personal Training provides one-to-one guidance with an antenatal-qualified trainer. We also offer dedicated Prenatal Mat Pilates classes at Elephant & Castle, designed specifically for pregnancy.

Please let us know as soon as you are comfortable doing so, and always tell your instructor before your class begins. This allows our team to provide appropriate guidance and ensure you’re attending classes that are suitable for your stage of pregnancy.

Up to 16-18 weeks, you can continue attending our Beginner and Level 1 Reformer Pilates classes. Level 2 is suitable only if you were consistently attending Level 2 before becoming pregnant, while Level 3 (Up-Tempo) and Jumpboard classes cannot be attended during pregnancy.

From 16-18 weeks onwards, you must complete a Pregnancy PT before continuing with group Reformer classes and may only attend classes taught by an antenatal-qualified trainer. If you are more than 18 weeks pregnant and have not yet completed your Pregnancy PT, you will need to do so before returning to group classes.

Between 16-18 weeks of pregnancy, we require existing students to complete a Pregnancy Reformer PT session before continuing with suitable group classes. The session gives you dedicated time with an antenatal-qualified trainer to learn modifications, adjust your Reformer set-up and understand how your practice will need to change as your pregnancy progresses. Your return to exercise will depend on your individual recovery and the type of birth you’ve had. We recommend allowing sufficient time for postnatal recovery and seeking guidance from your GP or healthcare professional where appropriate. When you’re ready, our Postnatal Mat Pilates classes provide a supported way to gradually rebuild strength, mobility and confidence before progressing your exercise routine.

Yes. Our Baby & Me Postnatal Mat Pilates classes at Elephant & Castle are designed so you can bring your baby with you. The classes focus on rebuilding strength and reconnecting with your core and pelvic floor in a supportive postnatal environment.

Pregnancy Reformer Pilates options are available across our Shoreditch, Hackney and Elephant & Castle studios, subject to our pregnancy class guidance. Dedicated Prenatal and Postnatal Mat Pilates classes are available at Elephant & Castle, where we also offer Signature classes including Strength, Barre and Yoga with pregnancy-specific guidance.
