The weeks and months after having a baby can completely change your relationship with movement, routine and even time for yourself. Returning to exercise postnatally is rarely about jumping straight back into intense workouts. For many mums, it is about slowly rebuilding confidence, reconnecting with their body and finding movement that feels beneficial, realistic and manageable alongside the demands of caring for a baby.
At Tempo 301, our Baby & Me Postnatal Mat Pilates class at SE17 | Elephant & Castle was created with exactly this in mind.
For many mums attending the class, it has also become far more than simply exercise. It has become part of their weekly routine, a chance to reconnect with themselves and an opportunity to meet other local mums navigating a similar stage of life.
Baby & Me Postnatal Mat Pilates Classes in Elephant & Castle
Our Baby & Me Postnatal Mat Pilates class takes place every Friday at SE17 | Elephant & Castle in Studio 2 with our skilled pre & postnatal Pilates instructor Gui.
Designed for postnatal mums returning to movement after pregnancy and birth, the class creates a supportive environment where you can rebuild strength while keeping your baby alongside you throughout class. Suitable for postnatal mums who have received medical clearance to return to exercise, the class welcomes babies up to around 6 months old – before they become more mobile and begin crawling.
The 45-minute class combines controlled postnatal mat Pilates with a relaxed, understanding atmosphere that reflects the realities of life with a baby. Feeding, changing, settling or simply pausing for a moment is completely welcome throughout class, helping mums feel far more comfortable and less pressured than they may expect from a traditional fitness environment.
Expect intelligent, flowing movement sequences with safe modifications provided throughout to support different stages of postnatal recovery. The focus stays on rebuilding core strength, improving posture and reconnecting with the body through controlled movement, while still delivering a class that feels challenging, energising and rewarding physically.
Alongside the physical benefits, the class also offers new mums the opportunity to meet other local mothers in a welcoming setting and create a consistent weekly routine outside of home life.

Creating a welcoming space for new mums
One of the biggest concerns many women have before attending their first postnatal class is whether the environment will actually feel comfortable once they arrive. Babies need feeding, settling and attention throughout class, and every day can feel different during the postnatal period. This is a key reason why we developed our Baby & Me Postnatal Pilates classes in SE17’s Studio 2.
We recently chatted with two students after class to hear more about their experience and why the class has become such an important part of their week.
Meet Eliza
Eliza has been coming to Tempo 301 for over two years. Before having her baby, she regularly attended Reformer Pilates classes at Tempo SE17, alongside massage treatments with Liz, something that both her husband and mum now do regularly too. After having her baby, Eliza returned to exercise when her baby was around three months old. She now attends two Reformer Pilates classes per week alongside the Friday Baby & Me Postnatal Mat Pilates class with Gui.
For Eliza, having a familiar environment to return to after pregnancy made a huge difference. Rather than feeling intimidated, the class allowed her to ease back into movement gradually and at her own pace.
Meet Alice
Alice discovered Tempo 301 differently. Living locally in the area, she searched online for postnatal classes and found Tempo via Google. After trying another postnatal class elsewhere, she said the experience at Tempo immediately stood out to her. She has now attended five Baby & Me Postnatal Mat classes and described the atmosphere as supportive, friendly and genuinely comfortable for new mums.
“The class still feels like a real workout…”
Both mums spoke about how much they appreciated the balance within the class. While babies are naturally welcomed into the environment, the focus still stays strongly on guiding the mothers physically through intelligent movement and guided exercise. They loved that the class still felt like a real workout, and described leaving class feeling stronger, challenged and noticeably more energised afterwards.
As one mum explained, the class never feels overwhelming or stressful. There is complete understanding if you need to stop, settle your baby or simply take a moment during class. That flexibility helps create an environment where mums feel far more relaxed and able to focus on themselves again, even if only for part of the morning.
How Postnatal Pilates helps rebuild strength and control after pregnancy
Returning to movement after pregnancy can feel very different from returning to exercise at any other point in life. Strength, posture, mobility and energy levels can all change significantly during pregnancy and early motherhood, which is why controlled movement becomes especially important during this stage. Gui’s Baby & Me classes focus on alignment, control and gradual rebuilding of strength. Rather than creating pressure around intensity, the class encourages mums to reconnect with their bodies at their own pace while improving overall movement patterns, posture and stability.
The mums we interviewed said they had noticed positive physical changes since attending regularly. Alice shared that the classes had helped significantly with an existing back injury, while both described feeling noticeably more energised after class, something many new parents understandably struggle with during the week. That feeling of having more energy, rather than feeling completely depleted after exercise, is something many mums say they are looking for when searching for a postnatal class.
Mental and social benefits of Tempo baby & me classes
Alongside the physical benefits, another thing the Tempo mums spoke positively about was meeting other local parents through the class. The postnatal period can often feel isolating, particularly during maternity leave when routines and social circles can change dramatically. Having a regular Friday class to attend each week has helped create consistency, familiarity and connection with other women going through a similar experience.
While neither initially joined the class specifically for the social side, both said they had enjoyed chatting with other mums before and after class and getting to know people locally through the weekly routine. That consistent Friday morning structure has now become important enough that both said they hope the class continues long-term, even once they return to work.
